Things to Love About Evanston, Illinois

10 Reasons to Love Evanston, Illinois

In Health, Inspiration by Companions for Seniors

Evanston, Illinois is one of Chicagoland’s most serene and picturesque communities. It’s a great place to visit for a day, or to call home.

Looking for a little local inspiration? Here are just 10 of the things that get us excited about Evanston:

1.) All Things Northwestern University

If you’re a Chicago sports fan, then you know that no day of Big 10 sports is complete without watching the Northwestern Wildcats! One of our favorite things about Evanston is how much school spirit you’ll find around every corner. The community is covered in purple on game days, and the sprawling campus features tons of places to explore — including the world-famous Dearborn Observatory and the beautiful Shakespeare Garden.

2.) Lakefront Views

Evanston is nestled along Lake Michigan about 12 miles north of downtown Chicago — and it offers some of the most stunning skyline views you’ll find in the area! On a clear day, take in a picture-perfect view of the city, or watch the boats buzz by on our Great Lake.

3.) Fabulous Food

Evanston is full of amazing restaurants, serving up every kind of cuisine imaginable from upscale fine dining to comforting breakfasts — and everything in between! Check out some great recommendations for local restaurants from Eater Chicago and TimeOut Chicago

4.) One-of-a-Kind Museums

Looking for a little local inspiration, or a history lesson you won’t find anywhere else? Evanston is full of great museums and cultural institutions, including the Halim Time and Glass Museum, the American Toby Jug Museum, and the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian. The Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art features rotating exhibitions and a stunning permanent collection, while you’ll find local treasures as part of the Evanston History Center, housed in the gorgeous and historic Charles Gates Dawes House.

5.) The Garage Door Gallery

Atlas Obscura describes Evanston’s “Garage Door Gallery” as a “vibrant drive-through” experience. The brainchild of local artist Teresa Parod, you’ll find the expansive garage door artworks between Thayer/Isabella and Thayer/Park.

6.) Locally Made Spirits

If you want to sample locally made drinks — or just learn more about how beer and liquor are made — then you have to pay a visit to one of Evanston’s wonderful breweries or distilleries. FEW Spirits distills locally sourced spirits, while the taps are always flowing at Smylie Brothers Brewing Co., Sketchbook Brewing Co., and Temperance Beer Co

7.) Convenient Public Transit

Getting around Evanston is easy, thanks to its convenient public transit options — including access to the CTA’s purple line; several Metra stops; and both CTA and PACE buses.

8.) Fun, Stress-Free Shopping

When your weekend calls for a little bit of retail therapy, Evanston is a great destination! This area features a wonderful downtown shopping district with lots of large stores, as well as lots of local treasures that are always worth a visit — including the fair trade international store Ten Thousand Villages, and the legendary Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop, which sells minerals, gems, and jewelry.

9.) Perfect Parks

Evanston is dotted by wonderful, relaxing greenspaces, including many that offer easy access to the beach! Some local favorites include the Merrick Rose Garden, Dawes Park, Fireman’s Park, and William H. Twiggs Park

10.) The Music

If you have a passion for music, Evanston has sounds that are sure to satisfy! Lots of up-and-coming artists stop by the area’s SPACE performing arts space; you can also enjoy classical performances, opera, and touring shows courtesy of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music.
