In the middle of a growing career in retail management, it hit me: I hate this. The work was unfulfilling and lacked a personal touch. After volunteering at a Chicago senior center, I realized I’d missed my calling.
Teaching art, playing music, or enjoying an outing didn’t feel like work. There was a soulful wisdom, humor and perspective that I experienced with older folks.
That’s when I knew I had to make a life-shifting career change.
After taking a job with the Council for Jewish Elderly, a nonprofit, I realized there were unmet needs in the marketplace. Seniors needed help that went beyond traditional offerings at senior centers and living facilities. They wanted a companion to take them to the grocery store, an appointment, or simply get through some day-to-day challenges.
Most of all, they craved connection, stimulation and moments of joy.
That’s when Companions For Seniors was born, and I became the first companion.
From there, we found a steady stream of clients, typically from the adult children of struggling seniors. Though many don’t admit it, seniors need help with simple errands, like going to the bank or post office, as well as household chores with groceries and tidying up.
Word spread quickly and we added more companions and services.
Today, we’re proud to offer a variety of services from one-off trips to 24-hour-a-day care. When I’m not at the office or with the team, you can find me with my wife and children enjoying sledding and snowball fights in the winter to tennis and time at the beach or the pool in the summer.
